Basking shark

Popularity   Easy to find
Risk   No risks at all

The basking shark is extremely popular around Koh Tao. While it does look like the sharks you normally see in horror movies, this is one of the species that will never bite – not even by accident. How come? Easy! This specie has no teeth. Basking sharks only eat leaves, yet they often swallow small fish. They cannot bite or chew.

While they might look scary at first, basking sharks are perfectly safe to be around. They will swim around you during your diving sessions and might even come close to find out more about you. They are not too large, so they would not even try anything because they only swallow small things. However, being around them gives you a feeling that you have never experienced before – totally worth it. Book today to meet this beautiful creature.

Gold tiger fish

Popularity   Easy to find
Risk   No risks at all

Gold tigers are small fish that live and swim in small shoals. They do that in order to protect themselves from larger predators. The good news is they will not run away from you, yet you are less likely to be able to touch them.

They can be admired from short distance. Once underwater, you simply cannot miss them. They look like tigers, only their colors are blue and yellow. They are bright and easy to spot from longer distances as well. The largest ones can get to about four inches in length, so they are quite big and attractive.

Mapping blue fish

Popularity   Easy to find
Risk  No risks at all

The mapping blue fish is one of those beautifully colored species that hang around the clear waters of Koh Tao.

Just like the gold tiger fish, the mapping blue fish will surprise you with its vibrant colors. You will see plenty of them, as they swim around in groups for protection. They are quite used to people going underwater, so they will not run away from you. However, when trying to touch them, they will most likely associate you with a predator and simply swim away.

Yellow zebra fish

Popularity   Easy to find
Risk   No risks at all

The yellow zebra fish is impossible to overlook. Such fish are extremely popular around Koh Tao and they can be observed right away. That vibrant yellow just sticks out and makes the difference. Dark yellow stripes resemble the appearance of zebras.

Unlike the above mentioned species, the yellow zebra fish swim in smaller groups – usually up to 20 individuals in one group. They will come close to people as long as they are not chased away by sudden movements. They associate such movements with predators' movements, so they will just swim away.
